How to properly Clean and Care for Your Leather Furniture
The Do's and Don'ts of Taking Care of Leather

Leather is one of the most durable natural materials one could select when picking out furniture. Most leather furniture is made from cow hide or lambskin and when properly cared for can last for decades.

When selecting leather you will find it comes in a range of colors making it possible to match tinting and shading to your décor. The natural texture of leather makes it perfect for both summer and winter. Leather feels cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Proper care of your new leather furniture starts with simple weekly cleaning. Using a soft, clean cloth wipe down your leather chair, couch or loveseat. Monthly you should use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove dust, dirt, crumbs etc.

If the leather is exposed to staining agents like pen, marker, blood etcetera, quickly clean up the stain using a blotting action. (Rubbing can spread the stain) Consult with the manufacture on their recommendations for chemical based leather cleaners. Sometimes leather cleaner recommendations are printed on the care tag that is attached to the bottom of the furniture. Once the area has been cleaned be sure to apply a preservative to the affected aread.

If you experience an accidental spill such as food or drink, again blot the spill immediately. You should use a soft clean, damp cloth with a very gentle soap and warm water. Again it’s always a good idea to review the care tag on the bottom of the furniture.

Every six months you should thoroughly clean the piece of furniture and then apply a leather preservative. This will keep your leather soft and supple, as it replaces the natural oils that are generally lost over time. The preservative will help prevent the leather from cracking and keep it looking new.
